My strength is to render what I see. In my artistic vision, I focus not on objects, but upon reflected light, seeing everything, including myself, as a mirror. I paint using vertical lines creating layers of interwoven color, depicting light’s subtlety. Using photography to capture the subject matter for my artwork, I paint a space where the viewer can feel both attached and detached, a sort of emotional and psychological tug-of-war, subtly documenting our trace.

The Impressionist movement obviously impacts my work. Still, the works of artists from the Renaissance to Minimalism, including, Post Impressionism, Realism, and Abstract Expressionism, have helped me focus my vision. Artists that resonate with me include DaVinci, Monet, VanGogh, Andrew Wyeth, Dorothea Lange, Thiebaud and Donald Judd. I recognize and accept these influences. I study how artists deal with space and light to create mood and presence.

My art extends into and is enriched by my work in the community and my study of culture and language. I have had the honor to serve on the boards of the Louisiana Partnership for the Arts, CODOFIL (Council for the Development of French in Louisiana) and the Louisiana State Arts Council. I also served as president of the board of NUNU Arts and Culture Collective for 3.5 years. During my time as president of NUNU’s, with the encouragement and help from the French Consulate in New Orleans, I worked with my co-director, George Marks, on developing an international exchange with the organization Les Articulteurs in Redon, France. This led me to a study of the French language and the French diaspora. I have both curated and participated in international exhibits including French artists from the Bretagne region and Louisiana artists with the debut of the exhibition, “Degrees of Separation,” in Marfa, Texas.

I believe in the artist as an active part of the social and cultural narrative. Looking at history through creative expression has given humanity better insights into not just the surface of historical events, but maybe also into the thoughts and psycho/sociological impact of current events. By using my “voice” I too can help promote or continue dialogues about the environment and man’s trace that will be felt far into the future.
